Fashion Designer

CHRISTIAN DIOR

Born in 1905 in France and passed in Italy in 1957. He was an iconic French designer who reintroduced femininity after the war. He turned focus to focus on luxury to women's fashion. After graduation, Dior opened a small art gallery that handled the works of Georges Braque and Pablo Picasso. After the gallery closed, he made ends meet by selling his fashion sketches. However, some years later he had to serve as in officer in the French army when World War II started. When he returned he was hired by courturier Lucien Lelong. Lenlong's design house would dress the women of both Nazis and French collaborators. He then found the house of Christian Dior on December 16, 1946. Dior considers 1947 to be year of conception as that is when he showed his first collection. His collection was a "new look". The look consisted of calf-length, full skirt, cinched waist and fuller bust. In 1948 he established a luxury ready-to-wear house on the corner of 5th Avenue in New York. In that same year he released Dior Parfums. In 1949, he released accessories to go along with the same look. In 1955 Yves Saint Laurent became Dior's design assistant who then succeeded him. He appeared on the cover on the Time magazine but then shortly after suffered his third heart attack and died at 52 in 1957. At the time of his death, Dior's house was earning more than $20 million annually.
