2001 Space Odyssey Notes

2001: Space Odyssey

** first trip to the moon was in 1968  believed going to space would be the same as flying to another state by 2001  thought the technology would have evolved within 33 years
**1961: first man in space; orbited Earth
** SYMBOL: recurring orange luminating circle (beginning – sunset, HAL – red light in camera)
 Arthur Clarke:
- Lived out dreams through science fiction
1960:
- Different speed in narrative; people were either high on LSD, shrooms
- Beginning music similar to opera
Dawn of Man
- Multiple pictures of sunrise, then of desert
- Monkeys eating, fighting for their space for their food to survive
- Cheetah v. monkey
- Monkeys group together to warn of danger or ritual
- Mono  rectangle
- Gospel music  rectangle almost something they praise, symbol of a cross
- Abstraction
- Before met foreign object; watering hole was full, now dry and bones
- Using a bone as a hammer to smash  new technology; extinction of other mammal (IMAGINATION)
o Foresee what is going to happen next
- Baby monkey playing with bone  early exposure to new technology
- With bone, now standing on two feet and beating each other
TRANSITION: One piece of technology (bone)  becomes new technology space ship
- Drawing parallels between what was as advanced as a spaceship for humans, was the discovery of bones for monkeys
- Plane (Pan Am)
o Americans are fluiing out to the moon
o Personal screens in aircraft much like to what planes are today
o Plane is empty (only one person)
o Flight attendant wearing grip socks to stay on ground in weightless air
“Space Station”
- Multiple offices
- So far no talking only instrumental orchestral music
- Facial and face recognition
- Voice print
- Hilton  hotel
- Futuristic furniture (red model chairs)
- Walking around space station as if gravity is how it is on earth; spins to create gravity
- Photophone
o Evolution of facetime
o Video and call at the same time
o Only a “traveling”; as if it is normal airline, business trip
- Americans talking to Russians
Clavius:
- Epidemic has broken out
- Two groups of prehuman’s recreated
Conference:
- No people of color
- Concern of anxiety of epidemic cause concern for family and relatives
- Epidemic  cover story
- Cultural shock  if information (what information, not said) released too quickly
Spaceship
 getting better at making space food (advancement)
 something buried under (millions of years ago)
- Explicitly buried for no one to find forever or was it there for people who had the technology to find it and uncover it
o A test of whether
Arrival on site:
- Eerie music  feel scared or frightened; raise anxiety; instill fear
o Kubrick does this in a lot of his movies especially The Shining
- Monkeys have created a home “base” in the area
- Same rectangular structure or statue
o After touching, monkeys discovered technology, after humans touched
- Same rise of the sun to the moon after touching the rectangular structure
Jupiter Mission (18 months later)
- Pod beds (hibernation chambers)  similar to “Beyond the Aqua”
- Refers to HAL 9000 computer as the sixth member of the crew
o See really just as another person
o Same data as human brain
o Spoke with HAL the computer
o “youre the brain and central nervours system of the ship”
o Same red orange circle  sunrise in beginning  red light in camera of HAL 9000s
o Says foolproof and most reliable
o Programmed emotions but don’t truly know if has feelings
HAL
- Playing chess with HAL  app; playing against a computer, not a real person
- HAL  human articficial language
o I B M  international business machine IBM; always references something
- Metropolis  Machine Hel
- Perspective through HAL lens (circular)
- Closest thing to HAL is Siri and Alexa
- Heavy breathing whole time working on fixing the instrument that is broken
- IBM on the spacesuit where buttons are
- Top of helmet has two dots (looks like bug or even alien)
- 0:1:18.10
- Screen inside helmet  seeing right through machine  seen through HAL
- HAL has made a fault and said had never made a mistake before
- Always been due to human error
o Never a computer error
- Every seeing eye of HAL
- Not a single thing not under HAL’s control
o Only way to stop and let humans controls and disconnecting computer
- Silence in outer space; Kubrick is the only one who doesn’t have any music  makes for a more dramatic tragedy
- Compuer malfunction
o Life support critical for those in hibernation
o HAL does nothing to fix
o Life functional terminated
- HAL is one of the most famous killing machines
- He is inside the brain of HAL
o Machine saying hes afraid
o Mind is going as he unscrews and tapes come out
o Keeps repeating “I can feel it” and “I’m afraid”
JUPITER and BEYOND
- Instead of eye of HAL eye of Dan in yellow and blue and he goes through Jupiter and all the different colors
o Purple and light blue (bright teal, almost neon
o Blue and orange
o Purple and blue
o Red and blue
o Green and red/ back to original human eye
- All frames have a sphere around them  circle lens with blurred out sides (spherical aberration)
- Dan has aged tremendously  no longer young, old with gray hair and wrinkled
- Dusk of man  same heavy labored breathing  same black monolith
- Us touching the black monolith
- Baby in sphere looking at earth hinting that the next generation will bring a new age of technology more complex than the last
