Artificial Intelligence and Pinnochio
Artificial Intelligence is by far my favorite film to have watched so far. The character development of David or should I say flawed character development really adds a layer of complexity to the film. David was created so as to be one of the first robots to be able to exhibit and show the emotion of love. In doing so however, the programmers failed to develop his complexity of love to only having an unconditional love for his mother. He never reaches past his love for this mother which when threatened with the return of Martin caused him to become mischievous and begin acting in what could be perceived as violent manner. Which can almost be connected to Bladerunner in that the replicants are also mere robots and turn to violence unwillingly. Pinnocchio although does not turn violent he still has the mischievous nature to him in that he runs away from home and disobeys his father. This highlights just one of the similarities between "Pinnochio" and Artificial Intelligence.
To connect between "Pinnochio" and Artifical Intelligence further, both boys want to find the blue fairy in order to become a real boy because they feel that is the only way they will fully feel valued, appreciated, and loved by their respective parents. David repeatedly says throughout the film he wants to be a real boy so his mommy will love him. Pinnochio wants to become a real boy to right his wrongs he did to his father in which he learns a very valuable lesson when the Blue Fairy instead imposes a spell on him that everytime he lies his nose grows longer. However, sympathy for these two characters as well as in Bladerunner are felt because all they want is to be treated like a real human. A real human may have created them, but created them with flaws that cause them to be shunned and perceived as "evil" to society.

Notes (Pinnocchio):
I also really enjoyed Artificial Intelligence, but it was just so sad!! When connecting both works, I noticed how Teddy in Artificial Intelligence and the Talking Cricket in The Adventures of Pinocchio are similar. Both of these nonhuman characters represent the moral compasses of both David and Pinocchio. They offer solid advice and offer insight about what to do when David and Pinocchio are facing hardship and danger. Both the boys do not take the advice of Teddy and the Talking Cricket at first, but by the end of each work, the boys realize their "consciences" are correct, and even end up saving the day!
ReplyDeleteArtificial Intelligence was actually my least favorite film we have watched so far because it was so bleak. David's story is completely heartbreaking and it honestly scared me about how complex we are making artificial intelligence today. I also noted how these robots throughout the movies that we watch are all considered "evil" just because they are human and are created with flaws. David never intentionally meant to hurt his brother or bring any harm to anyone, but he wasn't fully aware of his actions because he is not human. His programming is responsible for him being seen as evil and unlovable, but he doesn't realize this. He thinks he has done something wrong to make his mother not love him, which made the film so heartbreaking.
