Blade Runner Research and Notes
Philip K Dick Research:
Philip K Dick authored 44 novels and short stories which adaptations were made to film redefining science fiction. Blade Runner was based on Dick's story Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep. Much of his science fiction can in a sense be attributed to his disconnect from reality. He had troubles with mental health and saw visions he claimed were paranormal experiences. He creatively was able to tell stories that included the internet, virtual reality, and facial recognition which now have evolved but at the time was unheard of, unthinkable. He involved driverless, and flying cars both of which are still considered futuristic for our society. Dick also had the idea that we are living in a simulation which gives rise to possibility of the reality of all his futuristic technology portrayed in his short stories.
Review:
While this was not one of my favorite movies, it was interesting to see how Ridley Scott was able to twist the audience into multiple perspectives of each character. Initially, Scott points Deckard out as the protagonist as he is one killing and retiring replicants who are creating societal unrest. Replicants, Roy and Pris are two prominent replicants that could be considered antagonists as they cause immense chaos and exhibit destructional violence throughout most of the film. By the end of the film when Roy gives his famous "tears in rain" speech Scott almost turns the whole perspective around and makes the audience feel sympathy for the replicants. After all, the replicants were forced into this society by Dr. Tyrell, who knowingly created the replicants with flaws and could thus be turned as the antagonist and Roy as a protagonist. After Roy gouges Tyrell's eyes out, although this shows violence on the surface level, it can be seen as an act of vengeance towards Tyrell for making them live these lives they have no control over. Roy realizes he lived a very destructive life but it was merely out of his control because he was programmed to be the way he is. Deckard and the policeman could then almost also be seen as antagnosits because they were sent to kill and retire the replicants, ending their finite years prematurely and not letting them live out memories and the life they wanted to. At the same time however, were Deckard and the police officers doing those replicants a favor as to spare them from the complex of emotions Roy feels at the very end of the film.
